RE: No Black Friday Ads for RV's?

Think rvtommy has it right... I was talking to my dealer a few weeks ago and he said: 2006 was slow 2007 was worse 2008 is really bad!! He says his staff is at an all time low and the only thing that has been keeping him going is his plow business (he installs plows on light trucks in the wintertime)... He told me he's not going to big RV show here unless the manufacturer helps out with funding - says the business (or lack thereof) just doesn't support the costs involved... Les

RE: Max Tongue Weight Question

Les, that is great information. I have learned alot about rving from this site and my own experience. I am concerned about being over on my rig for my tongue weight. My family's safety is #1. What do you think, TV is 2007 Silverado Vortec Max NHT pkg, 10500 towing capacity, 16000 GCWR, receiver on truck says 1100 tongue weight. I tow a 2007 Jayco 31 BHS Jay Flight, sales literature says 960 dry hitch weight, 6830 dry trailer weight, 9000 GVWR. I think I am ok on tow capacity and GCWR but tongue weight is iffy? I like my dealer and think that they are reputable. They set me up with a 1000 lb weight distribution hitch from a company called Diversified Safety Products. I did do alot of rving this past summer with no troubles, but safety is #1. What do you think? Thanks. Well again, it is a question of being over weight for the hitch receiver and not the truck... Those of us towing larger trailers (myself, Joe - Crappie_Fisherman, John - JBarca, Barney, BarneyS) and a host of others have all upgraded our receivers... Joe is towing a trailer similar to yours and I think his tongue weight is #1100+ pounds - mine is #1400!!! If you loaded the typical #1000 of cargo into your TT and you have 13% tongue weight your at #1018 and over your receiver rating and your w/d bar rating... Now, it's not going to break instantly, maybe never, but wouldn't you rather have a little "fudge" margin than be over your rating :H Some of us have gone with the Putnam XDR and others like myself have gone with the Drawtite #41931 which are both in the #14-#16K rating with #1400-#1600 tongue weight ratings when using weight distribution... The only sure way to know is to weigh the rig or minimally weigh the tongue, but if you haven't weighed the entire setup yet, it's time to do so... Really guys, all those who are reading this thread and other threads like this, the only way to know what you have is TO WEIGH YOUR RIG... There just isn't any substitution for knowing your weights... We can suggest until "we're blue in the face" but if you know your weights, your 90% home :W Les

RE: Max Tongue Weight Question

Mike, I'll try to answer as best I can... What is the 990 lbs. "max tongue weight w/ wdh" on my receiver sticker and in the manual? What weights do I relate to this "max rating" to make sure I'm within the specifications? And then the introduction of the WDH... Does this change what I need to consider to ensure I'm within the TV's Max Tongue Load w/ WDH of 990 lbs. IMO, what they are saying is that the receiver on your truck is rated to #990 when used with a weigh distributing hitch... Again, IMO, as long as the receiver is bolted directly to the F-150 frame, I see the max tongue weight rating as a function of the receiver and NOT the truck... Assuming the receiver is bolted to the truck frame, the limiting factors are going to be the receiver rating and the truck rear axle rating... If you feel your tongue weight may exceed the #990 pounds, I suggest you look at other receivers for your truck with higher weight ratings and replace the OEM receiver... Does dry hitch weight of the TT (plus consideration for loading in the TT) correlate with the "Max tongue weight of the TV"? The "dry hitch weight" would be the tongue weight of the TT without any cargo, batteries, or propane or water or as it was specified in the TT brochure for a "bone stock" TT... If you added options at the factory or at the dealer, the tongue weight will be different than specified in the original brochure... Your tongue weight will change (usually get heavier) as you load the TT and this will be especially true when you install the battery(s) and fill the propane tank... Depending on how you load the trailer with cargo and water, and where those items are located within the trailer, will also effect tongue weight making it either lighter or heavier... Tongue weight could become lighter if your fresh water tank is located aft of the trailer axles or you hang a generator on the back bumper of the TT This is where I'm getting confused. Weight vs. Load at the Tongue and the Max tongue weight or load of the TV & receiver? OK, let's discuss weights of the TT and TV... TT GVWR - the maximum the TT can weigh when fully loaded... That weight sticker can be found on your trailer... On my TT it's on the street side of the TT right at the front of the TT... Tongue weight - that weight which is measured at the TT tongue, usually right at the ball coupler, when the TT is level... This weight needs to be from 10-15% of the max trailer weight and usually settles in right around 13% of trailer weight... Note that this percentage is of the loaded trailer weight and NOT necessarily the max TT GVWR... Example: If your TT weighs #6000 loaded, then tongue weight should be 10-15% of this and usually will be around 13% or #780... Trailer GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is the fully loaded weight of the TT including axle weight and tongue weight... I have never seen a max tongue weight specified on a given trailer... Usually the trailer is designed to carry whatever tongue weight the owner can sanely load into it Truck GVWR - the maximum your truck can weigh when full loaded with all passengers, cargo, fuel, hitch, and TT tongue weight... Truck GCWR - The maximum combined weight of your fully loaded truck and fully loaded trailer... GAWR - gross axle weight rating or the maximum weight a given axle on your truck (or trailer) can carry... I believe I can stay within all the other specifications: TV GVWR, TT GVWR, TV GCWR..... I thing you can too but I also thing you might be sneaking up on your truck's max GVWR... This is usually the case with a 1/2 ton chassis and is fairly common... Depending on the weights of your family and the cargo your carry in the truck and your TT tongue weight, you may be very close, but you can minimize this by off loading some of that weight into the TT towards the rear of the trailer... This will lessen the trucks weight and also lessen the trailer tongue weight thereby decreasing the trucks GVWR load... Just be sure your still close to 13% tongue weight or the towing characteristics of the TT could become unstable (sway)... Let me know if you have any further questions... Les

RE: Max Tongue Weight Question

Welcome to the TT Forum Mike - I moderate both here and on the Hybrid forum as well... I would think that your max tongue weight is going to be dictated more by the OEM receiver than your trucks max rating... Have you looked at the receiver to see if there are any specs on it??? Have you read THIS STICKY over in the towing forum??? Lots of good info there as well as THIS STICKY written by yours truly and a few of the other guys here on the forum... In looking at your truck and trailer, I don't see any problems... You might be a little close to your GVWR depending on how you load the truck and the cargo you carry, but run those numbers including all passengers, TT tongue weight and cargo carried in the truck bed... Take the rig over to the CAT or other scale and weigh it - that's the only real way to know what your dealing with... If your under your GVWR/GCWR I'd say your good to go... Overall I think your well within your limits including tongue weight but do double check your numbers and weigh the rig... Les

RE: JayCo Travel Trailer + Tahoe = Aerodynamic Issues

Very good advice from 3 of our resident towing experts - Turk2500, Crappie_Fisherman, and BarneyS... You can't go wrong with their advice - just ask me - I know all 3 of them personally and we have had many a conversation around the campfires with issues like this and other issues as well... Weigh the set-up like Joe advises... If you don't know the true weight of your rig, your shooting in the dark on all other issues... When I got my new TT back in 06, my first trip was to the local CG about 65 miles from home and the first stop before I got there was at the CAT scales about 35 miles from home... Good Luck and report back to us on your findings... Les

RE: Best portable waste tanks?

I have the 30 gallon Barker 2 wheel version... Yeah, it's a little heavy getting it to the truck but not too bad... I also got rid of those cheap plastic wheels and put on a set of harbor Freight pneumatic 10" wheels - make s huge difference when towing to the dump station... Mine is stored underneath my TT on a mount I built for it... http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b191/nomad27/Nomad%203150%20Modifications/CIMG0121.jpg width=640 And here is a picture of the pneumatic wheels on the Blue Boy (seen on a previous trailer http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b191/nomad27/Nomad%203150%20Modifications/BlueBoyandPump5.jpg width=640

RE: Wheel chocks - what kind is best?

WOW - 130 bucks for a pair of wheel chocks :E :E :E This cheap old boy made a pair of these for about 20 bucks... My first ones were out of 4X4 stock and 1/2" rod but with my new heavier TT I used 4X6 stock and 5/8" rod Les http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b191/nomad27/Nomad%203150%20Modifications/NewWheelChocks2.jpg width=300 http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b191/nomad27/Nomad%203150%20Modifications/NewWheelChocks.jpg width=300

RE: Winterizing newbie!

Well, if it's going below freezing there is always the chance a waterline will freeze up... But in your neck of the woods that has to be tempered with the fact that the cold doesn't get very much below freezing and doesn't stay there for any appreciable length of time... Still, there is always the chance if it does get cold... I would recommend one or two things for a little peace of mind... When you leave, you could drain the water system by pulling the low point drains... This will drain most if not all of the water from the TT and you could also drain the water heater and empty your holding tanks... Additionally, you could blow out the water lines if you have compressed air available and again drain the water heater... Then when you arrive again, you would merely need to turn the water back on at the outside spigot and refill the water tank and burp the water lines of air... Not a big deal either way you go... Or, you can do nothing and take your chances :W Les

RE: Winterizing - Don't forget the LCD TV/s!

I took mine out the first year but after researching it both here and other sites I thought pretty much like others that it probably won't hurt them... In that I don't turn them on again until spring and warmer weather I think I'm pretty safe, but thanks to stugpanzer for the thoughts on the subject...

RE: BAL stabilizer in center of TT

Good post by Will and I concur... They may be some improvement with the jacks at a 45 degree angle but the jacks themsleves have some slop in them and that also contributes to movement... Bottom line - it's a trailer not a house - your probably going to have some movement no matter what you do... However, I will add that I believe the base your on has a lot to do with it... My TT with the 6 stabilizers down on my paver base is rock solid... On a campground base of any type (aside from concrete) there is movement... And like Will, I think I'll be constructing a home brew set of JT stabilizers this winter... Les

RE: Hensley Arrow Right For Us or Too Complicated?

Steve, Very cool pictures of one MONSTER hitch - I AM ENVIOUS :B... Here's a picture of my 10K on my 250SD (when I had it)... Note that the I-Beam is a dual section on the 10K and also note that the end of the draw bar is bent in a upward fashion to increase ground clearance... Maybe a talk with Pullrite is in order to see if they can supply you with a draw bar that is pivoted up in this fashion... Les http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b191/nomad27/Pullrite3.jpg width=640
